The date code during these years was just placed on the box. Now, this doesn’t help much in many circumstances, because how likely is it that the box will still be around for as long as the gun exists. A gun made of steel and wood can stand the test of time. A paper box will likely not. Most people will have disposed of the box a long time ago, and so it’s unfortunate that the serial numbers were not stamped on the barrel during those 3 years. Thankfully, after , Remington went back to having the serial numbers stamped on the barrel again. One thing that you might notice when you examine the chart above, the letters for the year code repeat themselves. This means that sometimes you will have to consider the specific model of Remington firearm that you have.
Minor condition problems were present, mostly in the form of surface rust. The most significant rust damage had occurred on the back of the power supply case and the front of the power amplifier case. As for the receiver, some minor rust was present on the case mounting lips but the most serious rust was located in the RF coil section of the chassis. Most of the electrolytics had been replaced over the years, a coaxial cable was installed to replace a shielded cable in Receiver B, the Master RF Gain and Audio Gain controls had been replaced along with a handful of other resistors and capacitors but the essentially the receiver was complete and no modifications had be installed – just repairs.
The plastic dial scales were yellowed and warped – typical of certain plastics at that time.

Just to add more trouble, some pistols will simply be marked “Super,” with no letter codes. These are the Super linkless, quick-takedown lever versions of a number of models. I know of the Super designation appearing alone on model A and B pistols, but it can be on others as well. Use caliber and other details of the gun to determine your model if this is the case. Some older pistols will have no model number on the butt.
This used to be rare, but is increasingly common as old stocks are cleared out. These are all the year coded, Spanish government issue pistols, like the Model and Model

In many cases, the exact number of victims assigned to a serial killer is not known, and even if that person is convicted of a few, there can be the possibility that they killed many more. Organization and ranking of serial killings is made difficult by the complex nature of serial killers, and incomplete knowledge of the full extent of many killers’ crimes.

Most of these rifles were still in use during the Sino-Japanese War of the s and the Pacific War of the s. During the war and subsequent American occupation of Japan, thousands of these rifles found their way to the United States as war souvenirs, making them one of the most common foreign military firearms available in the country. The Arisaka rifles are named for Colonel Nariaki Nariakira Arisaka, who headed a commission during the s which was charged with developing a new rifle to replace the earlier models such as the Murata.
The Arisaka rifles were designated with the year of the current emperor’s reign. Thus, the Type 38 rifle was designed in the 38th year of the reign of Emperor Meiji , and the Type 44 carbine was adopted in the 44th year of his reign During the reign of Hirohito, rifles were designated by the last one or two digits of the adoption year according to the standard Japanese calendar. Thus, the Type 99 rifle was adopted in Japanese calendar year , and the Type 2 paratroop rifle was adopted in calendar year A chrysanthemum with 16 petals the symbol of the Japanese Emperor was usually stamped on the receiver of rifles manufactured for the Imperial Japanese Army, indicating that the rifle belonged to the Emperor.
The chrysanthemum resembles this: The chrysanthemum was at least partially ground off on rifles which were surrendered after the war, apparently as a face-saving gesture. Rifles captured in the field, however, normally have the chrysanthemum symbol intact. The Type designation was stamped into the top of the receiver using the character shiki for “type” and Japanese numerals. The shiki character and the characters for the Japanese numerals are shown in the following table.

Note that although the year codes start with A, that by itself is not evidence that these codes were actually in use by Actual observed marks on actual observed guns suggests that the year code system was not in universal use that early. So, just when did the Eibar proof house switch from the older stamps to the newer ones? It looks like the big year was Guns proofed in might have either the older or newer stamps. Of course dating the older stamps can be an exercise, as they don’t have a date code.
Make sure to take the serial number off the gun and not the box. Frequently, a zero appears at the beginning of the serial number on the box, and is not a part of the actual serial number.
This practice became most organized, and earned the name of “proofing” with the advent of firearms, when armor plates were proof tested to assure their resistance to proof against early gunfire. A representative sample of each lot of weapons is tested with a proofing cartridge, which has vastly higher pressure than the normal specifications.
If the weapon survives a certain number of these, it passes, and all weapons in the lot get the proof mark to certify they meet the government’s minimum expectations of function and safety. Though the US government has inspection processes for military goods, there is no proof house of any sort for domestic US gun makers. Yes, that means there are essentially no standards. Most other countries, do, including Spain. The model S photo to the left shows the typical location and appearance of proofmarks on Star pistols.
There are 3 on a typical commerical arm, and four on a typical military arm.

Many postwar guns are foreign designs and are commonly known by the designation given by the producing nation. Italian Designations Italian Designations Prior to the s, most large caliber guns and many smaller caliber guns were imported from Britain. For that reason, most of these guns were designed and designated in inch units. Guns developed in Italy after that time were identified by their bore in millimeters, the length in calibers of the bore and the year design was started either on the gun itself or on the mounting.
Often the manufacturer’s name was also included as part of the designation. It should be noted that many Italian-produced naval guns even to the present day have been to English measurement units, not metric.

Raised not incised slide serrations angled to the rear in a square block. Many of these serial numbers are estimates based on a limited sampling of known specimens. Early First Variant Early first variant lockwork, with no disconnector. The earliest first variant guns are primarily distinguished internally by having no disconnector, though certain external characteristics were retained after a disconnector was added.
There is no milled depression for a disconnector on the bottom of the breech block of the earliest guns. Specimens can be quickly checked for a disconnector by operating the switch at the rear of the grip frame and hinging the upper receiver housing upward–behind the magazine the earliest first variant guns will show only the top of the sear and the square stud which prevents the housing from being opened if the striker is cocked; whereas the late variant will also show the rounded top of the disconnector next to the sear.
The early first variant Dreyse has several minor differences from later guns. The left side grip screw also serves to retain the side plate that allows access to the lockwork. The second screw securing the side plate, located just behind the trigger, extends all the way through the right side of the frame.

Posted on Wednesday, September 20, by Thoreau 13 Comments Right now, conservatives have enough political power to prevent any substantial new gun control measures at the federal level. But liberal States, especially California, have been piling on the restrictions, working toward a complete ban as their true thinly-veiled goal. Eventually, liberals might regain control of the Presidency and Congress, making gun restrictions a looming danger for preppers. And it will be so much the worse if they ever get a clear majority on the Supreme Court.
Well, what if it does? What can we do?
Feb 16, · Serial number manufactured in These are rough numbers based on letters from the historian, there are a few guns mixed into the higher numbers with a manufacture date but few and far between.
There are basically three ways to determine when your rifle was made. They are date codes, serial numbers and rifles features. These should give you the month and year it was made. All the nylon rifles have date codes though sometimes the codes are confusing. When that happens a combination of serial numbers and design changes can be used in conjunction with the date codes to get a good fix on when the rifle was made. In this case EF Remington stamped a two letter code on the barrels of all their rifles.
The first letter is the month, the second letter is the year. The second letter is the year. Remington simply used the alphabet for the year code and when they got to the end they simply started over, well sort of. Since the Nylon 66 started in the code that year was an F. For some reason they skipped O in and went to P. In they skipped the Q and used R.
Somebody figured out that they forgot to use I, O, Q and R so they used those letters for Note that they used used several of the letters twice.
