The Basics of Telephone Wiring

There’s a lot of confusion about what causes that trouble alarm. This Tech Bulletin should explain it. The Cause The customer decided to share the phone line s for the Fire Alarm Panel with the regular phone lines used at the business. Depending on the particular type of fire alarm, there may be one or two lines. When the engineers designed the fire alarm panel they assumed you would have dedicated phone lines, as I believe is required for a UL Listed Fire Alarm usually required in hotels and places where there are a lot of people that can get killed in a fire. For whatever reason, most of the engineers seem to have chosen about 5 volts as the trigger threshold for the telephone alarm fault.

Can I hook up my cell phone to my fax machine? Can I do this? Is there any special software I need? Discussion is locked Permalink You are posting a reply to: The posting of advertisements, profanity, or personal attacks is prohibited.

The alternative is paying to use fax machines at a store, or purchasing your own fax machine and hooking it up to a telephone landline. Both will likely be significantly more expensive if you just need to send a few faxes.

This circuit is based on circuit posted to sci. Connect the components to make the circuit below: The circuit takes about mA current, so if the circuit is not in use all the time it is best to use batteries. You can also use small wall transformer to power the circuit. The ohm resistor used for limiting the power from 12V source to safe value for telephone electornics causes some problems because it causes imedance mismatch to the telephone line.

If this causes problems, you can add a capacitor to the circuit which makes sure that the circuit apperas to be like piece of wire in voice frequencies you can avoid mismatch caused by that ohm resistor. I added a 22 ohm resistor in series with the capacitor to limit the surge current which appears when the equipments go on-line. For normal FAX to modem usage this modification should not be necessary because equipments should be able to cope with those impedance mismatches the original circuit causes.

The circuit gives power to both telephones and provides the audio connection between telephones. The circuit does not provide any ring voltage, so you can’t use this circuit to make telephones to ring. Connecting two modems together with the circuit You can connect two computer modems using this circuit together. Just connect the first modem as shown in the picture and replace the fax machine with the second modem. You can establish connection between modems by making one modem to make a call by typing ATD command and making other to receive it using ATA command.

Some modems will work especially those with leased line mode when they are just wired together without the powering circuit described above.

If you are forced to send a fax, you can do it from your computer for free. With this process, you can digitally sign a document and fax it to a business — all on your computer and without any printing required. Fax machines are all connected to the plain old telephone lines. When you use a standard fax machine, that fax machine places a phone call to the number you specify.

The best thing to do is read the directions ideally, you get a splitter for your phone outlet and run one line to the fax, the other to your phone, and make sure you set the fax to pick up after 5 rings, unless you have a dedicated line, in which case you won’t need the splitter, and might want to set it to pick up .

Home FaxFax Functions Fax Functions The Fax is a communication function that uses a telephone line to send scanned originals paper or to receive data sent from remote machines. This machine has various features for fax operations, including those enabling the user to change scan settings according to the original and to save incoming faxes in a User Box. The following describes the precautions for using the fax functions.

To use the fax functions, the Fax Kit is required. This machine can connect to the following telephone lines.

Print at ISO speeds up to 16 ppm black and 9 ppm color, 6 and take advantage of intuitive copy, fax, and scan solutions. Print directly at the e-all-in-one, and create borderless brochures in a snap. Print directly at the e-all-in-one, and create borderless brochures in a snap.

On the back of phone jacks, there are usually four connections—one red, one green, one black, and one yellow. The red and green “Christmas trees” wires power the first, or primary, line in your home. The black and yellow “bumble bees” wires don’t get used unless a second line is added to your home. Adding a second line to your home is an easy task that even the least experienced do-it-yourselfer can do without costly interference from a telephone technician.

First, let’s look a few scenarios where someone may need a second line in their home: A home office may require a dedicated line for business purposes. You may have children who need their own line so that they stop tying up the main phone line.

A fax machine uses the same frequencies that an analog telephone uses – Ah, perfect! That is the key idea I was looking for. That is the key idea I was looking for. I assumed since more data is transmitted in a fax, it would use those higher frequencies as well.

I studied the problem and did it! Remember, a FAX operates the old fashion way, via ‘ shifted tones ‘ within the telco’s wired bandwidth! So how does one do it? Its rather simple really; One has to build an interface adaptor from the cell phone 2. The audio transformer must have three dc isolated but ac coupled equal windings. The FAX couples into the interface box via its two telco coupling lines.

Parts at ‘ Radio Shack ‘! Also, one needs a small 9v battery to ‘ fool ‘ the FAX into thinking that its plugged into the telco line! Remember, a FAX circuit works like a wire line telephone, it wants to see the two levels of closed and open key levels of the telco line! Open circuit on a telco line is 48 vdc. When the telco is connected and operating on the line, its at 4. So the audio transformer is wired in series with one of the equal impedance windings with a current setting resistor, select the resistor and wire resistance of the winding so that the current is at 10 mA.

Homeowners rarely attempt to work on their own phone system — but they should. Projects such as installing a new line are fairly easy to do, the work is relatively safe, and you probably have most of the tools on hand.

Best of all, you can save yourself a bundle. And electricians who do phone work aren’t any cheaper. We’ll show you how to install a second phone line — not another extension but a line with its own dedicated number. Another line comes in handy for a home business and Internet use, and to keep your kids from tying up the phone you use. What you learn from this project will help you with other upgrades and repairs. How to Add a Second Line The first step to adding a line is to contact the local telephone company and request a second line.

The company will make the required wiring changes at your Network Interface Device. It’s the junction box, usually located outside your house, where the phone company’s lines end and the wiring for your home begins. If there’s no NID at your home, the phone company will make the proper connections at a demarcation box.

As well, services that allow sending and receiving faxes over a web browser, email, or the internet use the internet to connect to the phone network for sending and receiving transmissions. Step 1 — Make sure you have everything you need especially a land-line phone line Fax machines require a land-line phone line to work. If there are two ports for a phone line, then one usually will be for connecting to the wall socket, while the other will be for adding an external phone.

You may schedule your service request up to days from today’s date. If the gas service is currently off, the technician will need to enter the premise to light and check all gas appliances and/or stubs.

Fax to Modem interface

Purpose[ edit ] Fax has no technical advantage over other means of sending information over the Internet, using technologies such as email , scanner , and graphics file formats; however, it is extremely simple to use: Computer fax over the Internet allows fax communication without an actual fax machine at either or both ends. It transmits data in the form of pulses via a telephone line to a recipient, usually another fax machine, which then transforms these pulses into images, and prints them on paper.

The traditional method requires a phone line, and only one fax can be sent or received at a time. The phone connection must not be a packet-based system in which delays can occur—a VoIP connection will not work well without special precautions T.

The On Hook Dial function allows you to dial while listening to the tone from the internal speaker. You can send a fax checking the connection. This function is not available for Internet Fax, IP-Fax, and transmission to e-mail/folder destinations.

I am not talking about a PBX this would cost to much but the computer fax or fax machine should beable to be set to pick up before the answering machine dynamically. Maybe the newer fax machines or fax software has this capablity? This would really be nice since then you could have a fax machine or fax computer on the same phone line as the answering machine and set the fax machine to pickup after 2 rings only if you had the extra tones down the line after your phone number But now that I think about it the extra tones would be after the phone is off the hook or a device has picked up But I am wondering if the phone company has a seperate plan or some service other then getting a seperate line where the above thought could work like allowing people to send extra digits after the phone number is dialed to send these to the person your calling so that a fax device can be place to listen for these to indicate a fax message from a voice message.

For example perhaps a person dials your number FAX So if the person dials the fax machine thinks its a regular voice message and never picks up. But if the person dials FAX the fax machine on the other end is engaged because it specifies the FAX indicator down the line Since caller id info is sent between the first and second rings I don’t see why the phone company cann’t offer some optional FSK bits down the line for the indicators for you for a reasonable extra price which is maybe a dollar or 2 a month or something Just a thought curious if anybody knows of such a thing or has thought of this before???

These optional FSK bits for the caller id info could be used for other things then this Thanks I enjoyed this thread.

Oct 31,  · Use laptop and telephone landline send/receive fax? or make phone calls? if it’s the latter then i’d advise you to go out and get a cheap $ phone that you can hook up .

Now, the utility of faxes, as well as their superiority on the messaging food chain, has been undermined by email and the proliferation of broadband Internet. That doesn’t mean that faxes are dead. Using a more modern version of the fax machine, you can still send and receive faxes, reviving an old idea with the very technology that overthrew it. Plug your Ethernet cable into your IP fax machine. This machine uses the Internet instead of a phone line to send a fax, but otherwise works in much the same way as the original fax machine.

Make sure the other end of the Ethernet cable is plugged in to a router or modem and connected to the Internet. Turn on and set up your IP fax machine.
